YOUTH ACTION TEAM
Melissa Legge, Grade 8, Aged 13
Hometown: Halifax School: Highland Park Junior High Interests: Drawing, Walking, Listening to Music, and hanging out with friends Activities: Drawing, Walking, Listening to Music, and hanging out with friends Reasons for submission: A Public Health Nurse from my school's told me about this contest. I am a part of my school's youth health centre so we are always presented with opportunities to do activities like contests and conferences. I am very interested in video making so I agreed, thinking it would be a fun thing to do. What would you like to get from your involvement on the team? I would like to get a new out-look on walking and exercise from my involvement on the team. General thoughts on walking: I think walking is really fun, whether it's with friends, a pet or family; it's a good way to exercise without having to pay for equipment that sometimes people can't afford. It's a great way to stay busy when you're bored, as well.

Brianna Smith, Grade 9, Aged 15 Hometown: Parrsboro School: Parrsboro Regional High School Interests: I enjoy Sports, Public Speaking, Pediatrics, and Volunteering Activities: I like to play Soccer, Basketball, Softball, and Schoolyard games (such as Chinese Jump Rope, Four Square etc.) Reason for submission: I submitted the video with my school youth action group because we thought it would be a great idea to show youth how much fun walking could be. We all noticed that students within our school become more and more wrapped up in technology, myself included, as we find more things to do with it (i.e. texting a friend instead of walking over to their house to see them in person). We also noticed that students were driving downtown, which is a short distance. I walk every lunch hour, instead of simply walking because driving is simpler to them. So really we submitted the video to show everyone that walking is not just good for you like everyone says, it can also be just as simply as driving and it can become a lot funnier than texting. What would you like to get from your involvement on the team? Just in general to get more kids interested in walking and getting healthier. I also I'm sure will enjoy meeting people with the same interests as me. General thoughts on walking: I think youth aren't walking today because of the new technology and available products available to them. I think if we display walking as a fun activity whether it is through an interesting commercial or a contest, then it may appeal to youth more than just hearing about it in an essay or reading about it in a book?

Jonathan William Smith, Grade 9, Aged 14 (almost 15) Hometown: Glace Bay School: St. Michael's Junior High Interests: Acting, Trombone, Piano, Singing, Reading Activities: Drama, Band, Piano, Reading Reason for submission: I submitted this video, not only to win the prizes, but mostly to join the Youth Action Team and give my creativity to aid the project. Also, I had just gotten a new video camera, and it would have been a shame not to use it. What would you like to get from your involvement on the team? I would like to get the satisfaction that people are more inclined to be active, and also to know that I helped with a project such as this. Although, I'm not exactly sure how we'll achieve our goal. Perhaps through mind control, but I'm not sure we have the budget for that. Subliminal messaging? No, too impractical. Magic? Maybe. We'll see. General thoughts on walking: It's good for you. It's easy. It's free (probably). What more do you need to know?
